About Katy

What started out as a wide open prairie and the hunting ground of the Karankawa Indians developed into an early community in 1872 known as Cane Island - named after the Cane Island Creek that ran through the area.

In 1895 the townsite of Katy was platted and supposedly named for the M-K-T Railroad that ran through it.  In 1945 the City of Katy was formally incorporated.

Katy is located 28 miles west of Houston.  One of the nicknames for Katy is “The City of Churches” and the slogan for Katy is “A Town With A Heart.”

Today Katy residents refer to the city as either “Old Katy” (or Katy Prosper) and “Katy Area".  The actual city limits of Katy lies mostly north of Interstate 10 whereas the “Katy Area” include areas east and southeast of the city limits and encompasses Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties.  The Katy Independent School District lies within both areas.
There are ten master planned communities in the Katy area with over 250,000 people, eight championship golf courses and 45 public parks.  No matter what your outdoor preference - Katy is sure to offer the amenities you are looking for.
With top-rated schools and a six-time state championship football team, families find this area a great place to live and raise their children.

Katy is home to Katy Mills Mall, an outlet shopping mall with more than 200 spcecialty stores.  Katy Mills was developed by The Mills Corporation and has been open since October 28, 1999.  Katy Mills Mall has about 1.3 million square feet of retail space and sits on 1.3 square miles of land.
